Tech support

This section of the documentation will teach you to:
  1. Fill the input fields in EFR Maker
    • EFR Maker will take these inputs and create a complex EFR that contains clip data and links to annotations.
  2. Fill the output fields in EFR Maker
    • The output fields allow you to specify names for the EFR and the other files that are created by EFR Maker.

EFR Maker input

EFR Maker is a program that takes a segmentation file previously created and converts it into an EFR complete with complex annotation capability. This section of the documentation provides instructions for completing the input fields of EFR Maker.

  1. Make a copy of the EFR Maker program file and place it in the same folder as your segmentation file.
Note: It is a good idea to make a temporary folder in C:\EFRauth for each project you are working on. You can then place your segmentation file and the EFR Maker program file in the temporary folder which is free of files from other projects.
  2. Open EFR Maker.
  3. Select your segmentation file by clicking on the folder icon and navigating to the file.
  4. Select a header file (if desired).
Note: The header file is an optional file that explains why clips were assigned a color. For example, extremely offensive clips could be assigned the color red, somewhat offensive clips could be assigned the color yellow, and clips that are not offensive could be assigned the color green. In such a case, the header file would assign each type of clip a color so that the end user would know why each clip was assigned its color.
  5. Enter the name of the movie (e.g. 'Holes').
Note: There is no need to get creative with the movie name. The actual name of the movie will suffice because the true identifier for the EFR will be the EFR ID that will be entered in the next field.
  6. Create a name unique to the EFR you are making and enter it in the EFR ID field.
Note: Incorporating numbers is a good way to keep track of versions of an EFR as it progresses through development (e.g. 'HolesESL1').
  7. In the Audio Language drop-down menu, select the language of the movie's audio.
  8. In the Links Folder Name field, enter the name of the folder which will contain the HTML pages for the synopses, questions, vocabulary, and other annotation files.
Note: The links folder name should not be a complete path. The name of the folder that contains the HTML files is all that is required.

EFR Maker output

This section of the documentation provides instructions for completing the output fields of EFR Maker.

  1. Check the Write Log File box if you would like EFR Maker to create a log file detailing the results of the processing.
  2. Check the Validate Segmentation Frames box if you would like EFR Maker to report any invalid frames in the segmentation such as overlapping frames, etc.
Note: Any invalid frames detected will be reported in the log file.
  3. Enter a name for the EFR you are making in the Core EFR field. This will be the name of the final EFR file (e.g. 'TheNameYouChoose.efr').
Note: The Core EFR field and all of the remaining fields serve to specify the files that EFR Maker will output to. In order to specify where you would like these files created, click the folder icon and navigate to the desired location. It helps to add core to the file name to distinguish this .efr file from the full .efr file you will be creating later.
  4. Enter a name for the vocab tokens file.
Note: This file will be a comma separated values (.csv) file that contains the tokenization data from the segmentation. The .csv file will contain a conceptID column that the developer can fill out in Excel.
  5. Enter a name for the vocab concepts file.
Note: This file will be a comma separated values (.csv) file that is mostly empty. The developer can enter the concept-based vocabulary entries in the provided columns using Excel.
  6. Enter a name for the transcript file.
Note: The transcript file will be a text file containing all of the //T: lines from the segmentation file.
  7. Enter a name for the log file (if you checked the Write Log File box). This file will contain all of the information about the processing of your EFR.
Note: The transcript file will be a text file containing all of the //T: lines from the segmentation file.
  8. Press the Process button. A message will appear that says Files written.
